Today is my birthday! I’m turning the big 3-0 today! I thought I would be a little upset about turning thirty but honestly I’m really happy. When I turned 25 I felt unsatisfied with my life. I thought (naively) that I should have accomplished more by that age but now I realize that you can’t measure yourself by what you’ve accomplished at landmark ages. I’m happy with where I am in life, what I’ve done so far, and the possibility of where I will be.
To celebrate this milestone I’ve had a fantastic weekend with great friends and family. My best friend took me to the Inflatable Structure show at 3rd Ward on Friday, and put me on the wait list for a class! It was a surprise and my co-workers and I were speculating all day about what she was up to. After many far fetched ideas, we realized we had no clue. I couldn’t have guessed this, it’s really an amazing gift! Thank you!
The show was eye-opening and I was in awe of the structures that were created and the fact that so many artists made them in their own New York City apartments! These things are massive. You really have to get creative with your space to make the form at home.
An alternate way to make the form is to bring in an image you would like to create and project it on the walls at the studio. You can then trace around the image in a larger format. Some people opted to use the clear plastic sheeting and light it with colored lighting inside and out. Others used colored fabric according to the look of their sculpture.
Meena and I got to speak with the artist responsible for Dances with Squid. He was having a few technical difficulties but the goal was to have the Squid Sculpture dance with you! I can’t wait until the Squid is up and dancing so I can visit again.
As the night progressed we had a few free beers and listened to the awesome beats, I gained some courage. I think I can do it. I can create and insanely awesome sculpture too! I’m so excited for to get off the wait list and get into the studio! Again, best birthday present. Seriously. #GiftIdea!!
