When we were first selected to be part of the BlogTour Cologne team, Modenus surprised us by mentioning that our trip would include a stop in Amsterdam. Of course all of us BlogTour-ers freaked out and tweeted it up! Within hours of the annoucement #BlogTourCGN was trending on twitter! On our last day of BlogTour we departed on a 6:30 am train for Amsterdam. Yes, we were tired and disoriented but we made it! Our day in Amsterdam was hosted by Eigen Huis and Interieur, as well as Meet the Blogger. We were greeted with a beautiful map and a lively team. Our first stop was Hotel Droog.
I had been to Amsterdam once before but it’s way more exciting when you’re being shown the town by locals, and being taken to the coolest design shops around! We took a tram, walked through a beautiful corridor with several books on sale, crossed one of many canals and finally made it to Hotel Droog.
Hotel Droog is located above the store Droog, where you can buy fabulous things, see art exhibits, sit and relax at the cafe, and pop into the connected beauty store. Droog was co-founded by Renny Ramakers, who is also the curator for the exhibits and products. I was blown away by the things inside! Some pieces I had seen before, but only online, never here in New York. And some pieces were brand new to me. It was so nice to see so many unique things, and to be honest, I was a little sad at the same time. Why can’t we get these things in New York?!
Good news – I found out we can. We can purchase things online, and if there’s something you want that you don’t see online, you can email the shop at firstname.lastname@example.org. If you’ve been following #BlogTourCGN on instagram and twitter, you’ve seen the interesting mugs we were drinking out of, where the handle can be turned to reflect your mood. Droog had tons of other cool things including envelope notebooks and business card holders.
Other floors housed other shops, and was also home to the cafe. KABINET is home to many fashion labels, and on the day of our trip also home to an art exhibit. WELTEVREE is a Dutch brand that focuses on outdoor living. We saw some very cool fireplaces and bathtubs!
There was another shop, COSMANIA. It was every girl’s dream – a white box filled with beauty products! As soon as I saw my favorite brand Malin + Goetz I knew I had to run, or wouldn’t stop shopping.
I didn’t think it could get any better… and then we saw the hotel! The space is so light and airy, at first I didn’t realize it had just one bedroom. It’s much bigger than a New York one bedroom! The hotel can be accessed through a separate entrance, or through the store. When you walk up the stairs you’re enter a foyer. On one side there is a full sized spa like bathroom, and on the other a living room with full kitchen. Off of the living room is the bedroom, also bright and peaceful. The space can be used for conferences and meetings in addition to a hotel room for the night.
The views from the hotel are amazing. We were sipping our lattes and enjoying macaroons and mini carrot cake, looking over the snow covered rooftops of Amsterdam. Can you believe this was just our first stop on the walking tour?! Man, I miss BlogTour!
