Design Crush Mondays: The Gourmet Tea in Sao Paulo

Last year the blogosphere went crazy when we saw architect Alan Chu’s pop up tea house in Brazil. The Gourmet Tea is one of the most famous tea lounges and stores with three locations in Sao Paulo. The exterior of the pop up shop looked solely like a colorful wall, but the walls opened out in several compartments to create the hidden gem. Prior to the pop up store, Chu designed a permanent location for The Gourmet Tea.

Both the storefront and pop up are similar. They are filled with colors, which are inspired by the 35 teas offered at The Gourmet Tea. In the store the colors are seen in the pendant lamps, the built in display unit as well as the tea tins, displayed along one wall.

The neutral space allows the tea to shine. The colorful display and lights are placed against white brick walls, with light wood tables and chairs on the opposite side. The wood floor is slightly darker than the tables but disappears into the space.

The Gourmet Tea was designed to be used as both a store as well as a tea house, where customers can sit and enjoy their tea. I love the bright colors and would definitely meet a group of friends here!
