As a long time fan of designer Alexa Hampton, I was thrilled when I received a copy of her latest book, Decorating in Detail. Actually decorating in detail is an art, which many don’t pursue anymore. As Alexa explains in her forward, much of the design nowadays is modern, clean lines and similar silhouettes. Alexa manages to bring detail back into our lives in moderation. Her designs are not overwhelming, instead perfectly detailed, so you know you are walking through luxury.
In her book Alexa takes us on tours of seven of her clients’ homes and shares the detail that she’s brought into the spaces. She shares her thought process on picking fabric and trims, points out unique curtain rods in a space and notes why certain things may have caught our eye in a room.
Alexa also walks us through design challenges and how to address them. In each home Alexa shares tips of the trade including how to design around a room with a view, items to be considered when designing a closet and how to create a jewel box room.
At the end of the book Alexa shares a guide of her own, which includes types of curtain headings, examples of valances and swags, ideas of where to place a chair rails and heights of sconces. In addition to the beautiful spaces this book can serve as a tutorial for anyone attempting to redesign their own home.
If you are decorating your own home you’ll learn through this book that the devil really is in the details. As in fashion the details are what makes a space unique and luxurious. Alexa Hampton’s Decorating in Detail is a wonderful coffee table book as well as guide book for designers and aspiring designers. I highly recommend it!
