The Cross Design in Vancouver, Canada

“It was a dark and stormy night…” Well, not really but it WAS a dark and rainy Vancouver morning when I shook off my umbrella and stepped into the gorgeous, bright, and inspiring Cross Design.the-cross-design-vancouverI met co-owner Stephanie Vogler last year when she styled my home for a magazine photo shoot published last October. You’ll often see the Cross Design credited in major Canadian shelter magazines. Her style? Refined and relaxed, more playful than perfectly polished.

Stephanie and her business partner Darci Illich shook up the previously conservative Vancouver design scene in 2003 when they opened their shop. Think a west coast version of New York’s ABC Carpet & Home with gifts, books, décor, case goods, and upholstered furniture. They even have their own line of bedding. It doesn’t stop there as interior design services comprise about 25% of their business.

Housed in the Yaletown neighbourhood on a cobblestone street overlooking False Creek, Stephanie and Darci recently expanded the Cross Design to 8,000 square feet.

They are the masters of styling with everything beautifully presented. You don’t have to imagine how this or that item will look in your home, you can see it in the displays. I love looking at shelter magazines but it certainly makes a difference when you can see things in person.

At a time when some may still want to play it safe with lots of neutrals, Stephanie goes bold with color and shape and texture. And she’s a big champion of local business with most of her upholstered furniture manufactured here in Vancouver.

And their staff – you would be hard pressed to find a team that’s as creative and enthusiastic and service-oriented.

Whether you are looking for a gift, a few accessories to freshen up your living room or planning on making a major interior design change in your home, you will find it at the Cross Design. And non-Vancouverites? They have an online shop too.
